A predictive model App for floods

A river is a treasure, but it is also a force of nature. You cannot stop or tame it, but you can surveil it and let those who need it, enjoy it, safely.

SUMMARY

Riverflow is a predictive model application that collects atmospheric and environmental data and transforms it into useful information to predict floods occurrence and give an early alert for prevention measures, and monitor water levels in streams and rivers.

Acting as an Early Warning System, Riverflow has both in situ sensors, and forecast weather data to predict imminent floods, and flood forecasting.

PREDICT

Anticipating flood actions can minimize the impact on flood control gates operations, removing obstacles, and installing of temporary flood barriers.

PREVENT

Riverflow analyzes patterns of water levels throughout the course of the rivers, and has an alert system to identify discrepancies, obstructions, and optimize predictive maintenance operations of the riverbed.

MONITOR

HOW IT WORKS

Simple App, complex functionality

With sensors on strategic spots along the riverbed, Riverflow works as a monitoring system that collects and analyzes data from the environment, functioning as an early warning system that predicts floods.

Combining water level sensors, weather stations and forecast data, the algorithm is implemented using user configurable thresholds which allows for a real-time measurement and a progressive monitoring. The Riverflow algorithm also alerts for possible obstruction accumulation of debris or sediment between sections of the river, providing a predictive maintenance scheme for the targeted riverbed.

CASE STUDY

Angra do Heroísmo county’s Hydrologic Cycle Project is the case study for the Riverflow project. The goal is to predict and prevent natural disasters related to stream flows by generating an early warning to the county’s Emergency Management Department. The hazard of flooding in those villages built close to the streams are likely/imminent, but by monitoring and understanding the water flow behavior in these streams we can avoid the loss of human lives, animals, houses, and roads, building more resilient communities.
